Spontaneity is the catchword for Miss Laine's choice of repertoire, but her programs always include substantial representation from the great Broadway composers, almost inevitably including the work of the great George Gershwin. From the world of jazz, Ms. Laine frequently pays tribute to the unforgettable music of Duke Ellington. Of course, no Cleo Laine program would be complete without a sprinkling of her famous Shakespeare settings, some of them by her late husband Sir John Dankworth. Ms. Laine is thrilled to return to San Francisco to once again delight her fans with warm memories from a passing age in music and an iconic voice that has moved generations. Dame Cleo Laine runs for 6 performances only Tuesday-Saturday, October 19-23 at 8:00 PM and Sunday, October 24 at 4:00 PM. A longtime disciple of Dinah Washington and other legendary jazz singers of the '40s and '50s, Schuur has built a stellar career by embracing not only the jazz of her parents' generation, but also the pop music of her own youth during the late 1950s and '60s. In a recording career that spans nearly three decades - and includes two Grammy Awards and three Grammy nominations - Schuur's music has explored nearly every corner of the 20th century American musical landscape.
Some Other Time, Schuur's February 2008 Concord release, is a recording of songs by jazz artists whom she first discovered via her parents during her childhood and adolescent years. The album features songs by George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Sammy Cahn, Rogers and Hammerstein and more. Long regarded - and sometimes criticized - as an artist who has walked a tightrope between jazz and pop, Schuur has the unwavering statement about her commitment to the jazz tradition and its influence on her artistic sensibilities. Diane Schuur "Singing & Swinging With Deedles" runs for 6 performances only Wednesday-Friday, October 27-29 at 8:00 PM; Saturday, October 30 at 7:00 PM and 9:30 PM; and Sunday, October 31 at 7:30 PM. Category: Nightlife Instrumental, Smooth Jazz: Flamenco, Jazz, Bossa Nova, World Fri, Nov 26, 8pm Sat, Nov 27, 7 & 9:30pm Sun, Nov 28, 7pm $42.50 OTTMAR LIEBERT An Evening Of Solo Guitar With Ottmar Liebert returns to the RRazz Room for a series of solo guitar performances. Liebert's incredible global success on a musical level often seems like a simple outgrowth of his cultural background and powerful wanderlust in his formative years. Born in Cologne, Germany to a Chinese-German father and Hungarian mother, he began playing guitar at 11, and traveled extensively through Europe and Asia intent on fully absorbing each musical tradition he encountered. After pursuing his Rock and Roll dreams, first in his native Germany and then in Boston, he abandoned the frustrations of the East coast and settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico. By 1989, he had founded the first incarnation of his new band Luna Negra. Nouveau Flamenco began life as a self-produced local release called Marita: Shadows and Storms, copies of which local Indian artist Frank Howell distributed in his art galleries. When the record found its way to radio stations and began generating a buzz among programmers and an unprecedented response among listeners, Higher Octave Music picked it up and released a fully remastered version. Liebert has since become one of the most successful instrumental artists of the past decade, thrilling audiences throughout the world and releasing a catalog of classic recordings, including the remix collection Euphoria (1995), the live album Viva! (1995), the double CD Opium (1996) and the classical-oriented orchestral album Leaning into the Night (1997). He wrapped up his decade with Epic with 2001's Little Wing and went back to Higher Octave Music, releasing a lush album of lullabies called In the Arms of Love in 2002 and an album with Luna Negra XL called The Santa Fe Sessions (2003). La Semana (2004) was the first all-new band album in five years, followed by Winter Rose (2005), which featured original pieces, classical music and Christmas songs. In 2006 Liebert's record label SSRI released One Guitar, his first solo guitar recording, which received Liebert's fourth nomination for a Grammy. His newest releases are Up Close (2008), which is a binaural dummy head surround sound recording, and The Scent of Light (2008) a labor of five years. The Scent of Light was nominated for a Grammy in the Best New Age Album Category. An Evening Of Solo Guitar With Ottmar Liebert runs for 4 performances only, Friday, November 26 at 8:00 PM; Saturday, November 27 at 7:00 & 9:00 PM; and Sunday, November 28 at 8:00 PM.
